Writer: Kristina CrogKristina Crog

Pastor Laura Franks Benton of Just Brave Enough returns with the third lent creative writing prompt for our Windows to Wonder series.

Food for Thought to Get You Started

"Take the first step in faith. You don’t have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step."— Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

"You can only see as far as your headlights, but you can make the whole trip that way."— E.L. Doctorow

Courage isn’t about knowing the whole journey ahead. It’s about taking the next step, even when the road is uncertain. Faith and bravery are woven together—trusting that even in the darkness, the light we have is enough to keep going.

In John 7, Jesus steps forward despite the growing danger. He knows the religious leaders are looking for a reason to kill him. He tells his disciples he won’t go to the festival of Booths, yet he goes anyway. And not only does he go—he teaches in the temple, fully aware of the risk.

Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. understood this kind of courage. In his final months, weeks, and days, he knew what awaited him, yet he continued his work, leading with faith rather than fear. Like Jesus, he stepped forward anyway.

This Week’s Window to Wonder Lent Creative Writing Prompt:

Think of someone—real or fictional, past or present—who has shown great courage.

Write about a moment when they were brave. Maybe it’s a letter to them or to someone else about them. Maybe it’s a poem, a short story, or even a scene from a play.

Set the scene. Where were they? What did bravery look like in that moment? Were they confident, scared, tired, resolute? Let yourself inhabit the scene with them.

Because courage isn’t always about having all the answers. Sometimes, it’s just about taking the next most faithful step.
