As we continue our Window to Wonder stitch-along, we step into the nighttime conversation between Nicodemus and Jesus in John 3:1-21. There’s something about this story that invites us to pay close attention to the setting—Nicodemus comes to Jesus under the cover of darkness, a detail that speaks volumes. Is he hiding? Is he simply seeking wisdom at the end of a long day? Or is he standing on the edge of something new, unsure whether to step fully into the light?

Like Nicodemus, we sometimes find ourselves standing at the edge of the firelight, drawn to something deeper but uncertain about what stepping forward might mean. What would it take for us to move toward the warmth, toward the light of Christ’s love? And what holds us back?

Ways to Cultivate Contemplation with this Lent Stitch Along

Awareness – As you stitch this week, take note of your body. Feel the tautness of the fabric in the hoop, the tension when you insert your needle. The more we root ourselves in our bodies, the more we encounter the incarnated Christ.

Notice God’s Presence – Where have you encountered God this week? Take time to reflect on a moment when God showed up in an unexpected way.

Engage with Scripture – Read or listen to John 3:1-21 then reflect upon these questions:

  1. Imagine Nicodemus standing at the edge of a firelight conversation. What emotions do you think he was feeling—curiosity, fear, hope, hesitation? Where do you see yourself in his story?

  2. Jesus describes judgment not as something imposed, but as a response to the light—some move toward it, others step away. How have you experienced this in your own life?

  3. What does it mean to believe you are worthy of the light? How does stepping into that truth shape the way you live?

Listen & Reflect – Join Pastors Tina, Angel, and Laura on our companion podcast as they explore John 3:1-21 and Nicodemus' fireside chat. Episode drops on March 10, 2025.

May your stitching this week be a space to dwell in these questions, to wonder, and to listen for where God is inviting you to step forward.
