Welcome to the third week of the crochet along pattern for the Lent 2025 Windows to Wonder series. Each Monday of the crochet along will reveal the next set of rows to make your Windows Shawl.
As we continue our "Window to Wonder" journey, our latest episode focuses on John 7:1-21—a passage that reveals the growing tension around Jesus’ ministry and the uncertainty of those closest to him.
Much has changed since our last conversation. It’s only been five chapters since Jesus spoke with Nicodemus under the cover of night, yet now people are searching for him with deadly intent. His brothers—part skeptical, part supportive—urge him to reveal himself publicly at the Festival of Booths, perhaps not fully grasping what that means. And the religious leaders, caught between faithfulness to God and survival under Roman rule, struggle to make sense of Jesus’ actions. Their motives are not simply villainous; they are complex, layered with the weight of history, tradition, and fear.
Lent gives us time to sit in this in-between space. We are invited to wonder, to wrestle, and to recognize that sometimes faith is about glimpses rather than complete understanding. The festival in John 7 marks the sojourn of God’s people through the wilderness and the giving of the Law, mirroring Jesus’ own journey. He is the fulfillment of the Law, the Word made flesh, the one who dwells (tabernacles) among us. The echoes of Israel’s history are loud here: the uncertainty, the questioning, the need for signs and clarity. Even those closest to Jesus struggle to see the full picture. Like peering through a window, they only catch a glimpse of what is beyond.
Ways to Cultivate Contemplation with This Lent Crochet-Along
Seeing Through the Loops – The practice of crochet creates intentional spaces—reminding you of glimpses, rather than the whole picture. With each open stitch, pray about something you do not fully understand yet—perhaps a challenge in faith, a situation that requires discernment, or a place where you long for clarity.
Acknowledge the Mystery – Invite patience into your heart, knowing that faith often works in glimpses rather than full pictures. As you finish a row, hold your work out from you. Glimpse through the windows and reflect on what you see.
Engage with Scripture – Read or listen to John 7:1-21 and consider these questions:
Where in your own faith journey do you find yourself longing for Jesus to reveal himself more clearly?
How do the tensions between faith and the expectations of the world shape your understanding of Jesus?
What glimpses of God’s presence have you noticed in this Lenten season?
Listen & Reflect – Join Pastors Tina, Angel, and Laura on our companion podcast as they explore Jesus's secret sojourn to the Festival of the Booths. Episode drops March 17, 2025.
As we continue this journey of wonder, may we trust that even when we see only in part, God’s story is still unfolding before us.
