Exploring the Jesus Fish Chrismon in Light of Advent

As Advent begins, we journey toward the coming of the Christ, the embodiment of hope, peace, joy, and love. Along the way, we encounter symbols that have woven their way through Christian history and devotional practice. One such symbol is the Jesus Fish Chrismon, a simple yet profound emblem rooted in scripture and faith.

More than a bumper sticker or a decorative decal, the fish symbol connects us to the early church, a time when following Christ was a dangerous yet deeply communal act. The Greek acronym for "Jesus Christ, God's Child, Savior," or Ichthys, became a secret sign among early believers, marking places of refuge and fellowship. It was, and remains, a quiet declaration of faith, community, and God’s enduring presence.

Connecting the Jesus Fish Chrismon to Scripture

Advent, with its themes of waiting and preparation, invites us to reflect on how these meanings resonate with us today. The story in Luke 5:1–11 offers a poignant starting point. In this passage, after a long and fruitless night of fishing, Jesus instructs Simon Peter and others to cast their nets once more. They obey and haul in an abundance beyond their imagination. This miraculous moment is about more than just fish—it’s a revelation of divine provision and an invitation to a greater calling. Jesus says, “From now on, you will be catching people,” redefining their purpose not as workers in earthly economies but as partners in God’s liberating mission.

Another layer of this symbolism appears in Matthew 17:24–27, where Jesus instructs Peter to find a coin in the mouth of a fish to pay the temple tax. This act underscores the Creator’s authority over creation and the promise that God's provision is enough. It reminds us, especially during Advent, that God's abundance flows in surprising ways, sustaining us as we await the fullness of the Christ’s arrival.

We dive into these ideas deeper in our podcast episode "Behind the Image of the Jesus Fish Chrismon"

Stitching an Image of Faith

The Jesus Fish invites us to reflect on Advent’s call to abundance and community. Each time we create something—a Chrismon ornament, a cross-stitch project, or a piece of art inspired by scripture—we join this tapestry of faith. Crafting becomes an act of hope and devotion, mirroring how the early Christians carried their faith in quiet, visible ways.

As we journey through this Advent season, consider incorporating the Ichthys into your creations by stitching the free cross stitch pattern that is a part of our 2024 Christmas Chrismon Stitch Along. Let it remind you of the profound abundance offered by the One we await. Reflect on how this symbol has stood as a testament to community and faith through ages of trial and triumph.

May this season inspire your creative endeavors, deepen your connection to scripture, and draw you closer to the mystery and joy of Emmanuel—God with us. Together, let us craft and celebrate the abundant story of the Christ who is coming into our midst.
